JACKSON – The Starkville Yellowjackets survived a night of three turnovers to escape with a 23-6 Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 victory over the Provine Rams at Hughes Field in the heart of the capital city.
Starkville improved its records to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the region.
Provine took advantage of an early turnover to take the lead in the first quarter.
After the Jackets fumbled the football away on their first offensive possession, they held Provine without scoring.
Starkville wasn't as fortunate on the next miscue as a 44-yard interception by Tevin Carter gave the Rams a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Jackets responded to the adversity by executing a 69-yard drive on the next offensive possession and quarterback Gabe Myles scored on a 7-yard run at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked and the score stood tied at 6-6 after one quarter.
Starkville took a 9-6 lead with 7:56 remaining in the second quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Taylor Wise. The Jackets clung onto that advantage at halftime.
Starkville had 415 yards of total offense with 226 of those coming in the first half.
The Jackets added to their lead in the third quarter on another Myles touchdown run, this time on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The play came after a 52-yard drive that consumed over 4 minutes on the clock. Michael Sullivan added the PAT to up the score to 16-6.
Starkville put the game on ice in the fourth quarter when Jaquez Horsley broke loose for an 80-yard scoring run.
Horsley was the leading rusher for the Jackets with 102 yards on eight carries.
Starkville had 315 yards on the ground as a team. The Jacket defense held Provine to 106 total yards.
