Mississippi State’s women’s golf team opens the 2012-13 season today with the inaugural Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational.
When the ladies tee it up at Old Waverly Golf Club later today, it will mark the first time in the 33-year history of the program the Bulldogs will host a regular season event.
The three-day, three-round event tees off Monday morning with Ginger Brown-Lemm’s squad paired with SEC-foes Arkansas and Kentucky at 9:30 a.m. Also participating in the event are Cincinnati, Memphis, Murray State, Southern Miss, Tulane, South Florida, South Alabama, and Kennesaw State.
“Our team is young,” said Brown-Lemm. “There are a lot of good teams in this tournament, but our youth and fire can be a good combination.”
State’s team will feature a trio of sophomores, a newcomer in Gabi Oubre’, and of course the veteran of the team Mary Langdon Gallagher.
Last season, Rica Tse, Elena Warren, and Ally McDonald finished the year ranked as the fifth best freshman call in collegiate golf according to GolfStat.com.
Gallagher, a Greenwood native, is the only upperclassman on this season’s roster and leads with way with 19 tournament appearances under her belt.
Freshman Logan Chaney will also make her career debut as an individual.
All State fans are encouraged to make their way out to Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point for the action. The tournament will run through Wednesday’s final round and admission is free.
