BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –– A memorial service for Carolyn Laird Lueken was held Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Birmingham, Ala. with a visitation at 9 a.m.
Mrs. Lueken, a longtime resident of Birmingham, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 30, 2010 after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Starkville on Jan. 4, 1947. She was a graduate of Starkville High School, where she was drum major, an accomplished musician and pianist, along with being a member of the girls’ basketball team. She attended Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama.
Her career as an accountant spanned many years with private business and with the United Way of Birmingham, Ala. She was also Starkville’s first Miss Hospitality. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Elsie R. Chamberlain and Dr. Kermit D. Laird; stepfather, Claude (Buddy) Chamberlain and husband, Kenneth J. Lueken Jr.
She is survived by her brothers, Kermit D. (Luanne) Laird Jr. of Starkville, John W. (Kim) Laird of Houston, Texas, Dr. David W. (Patsy) Laird of Oak Ridge, N.C., Jim C. (Harriet) Laird of Starkville; sister, Jan Laird (Wally) Mullen of Starkville; stepmother Marilyn Laird of Starkville; her loving stepchildren, LouAnn Lueken (Jim) Craig of Birmingham, Ala., Kenneth J. (Michelle) Lueken III of Birmingham, Ala. and Suzanne Lueken (Tim) Needham of Eclectic, Ala.
Her many step-grandchildren include Stephanie Marie Romei, Brittany Romei Reach, Alexander Phillip Romei, Dallas Holmes, Kenneth J. Lueken IV and William Evan Craig. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
