Sitel Corp. Vice President of Global Product Management Andrew Kokes has confirmed that 58 employees in the company’s Starkville-based call center will be laid off in September.
Sitel, a business process outsourcing provider based out of Nashville, Tenn., currently has nearly 500 call center employees in Starkville.
Kokes said the cuts are being made as a result of the changing needs of one of Sitel’s clients.
“The reason for the positions being reduced is related to the changing business need of one of our customers in that facility,” Kokes said. “It is in no way a reflection of the quality or performance of any of the individuals on that team. It is certainly related to the changing business need of our client.”
Kokes was unable to identify the client, nor was he able to provide details on any compensation, but he said the employees being affected are encouraged to apply for other open positions within the company.
“(A layoff is) always the last move we want to make. The 58 positions that are being reduced are a direct reflection of the changing business need of our customer,” Kokes said. “The positions we offer are those positions that are outsourced to us. When the client makes a change, that’s when we had to make a change and the positions were no longer available. We are allowing all of those people who were impacted to post for other positions open in the facility.”
Sitel’s Starkville call center opened in 2000. Two waves of layoffs were made there in February and March of 2010 before Sitel announced an expansion of the call center in August of that year — a move representatives said would open 400 jobs.
The call center is located in the Thad Cochran Research, Technology and Economic Development Park.
