While she might not rest her head here every night, the love and attention Lucy Arant has given to her weekend getaway spot certainly makes this house a home.
Living mostly in Ruleville with her husband Hugh, Arant said her home in Sherwood Commons has been a wonderful place to gather with family and friends.
"We'll get together with the kids on the weekend for football and baseball seasons," Arant said. "It's gotten hard to get away, so this gives us the opportunity to get together."
Arant, a former teacher in LeFlore County, said she and her husband have had the home for two years, and has enjoyed her retirement.
"When I retired, I was able to focus on my passions and hobbies of gardening and painting," she said.
Arant said the decor in her home and her decorating style comes from planning around and branching out from a singular source of inspiration.
"For me, you work around one thing that you really like," she said. "I used colors from this rug that I love. I built around that and it seems like everything just meshed together."
Arant said she has been collecting art for several years, and the walls of her home showcase a wide range of artists and styles.
"I developed an interest in art later in life, but I have lots of pieces from friends and artists I admire," she said. "I just enjoy looking at it, and I especially love color and seeing what people can do with their creativity."
Stepping through the back door, however, leads to Arant's favorite part of the home.
"I just love outside," she said. "I'm so pleased with it."
Arant said through hard work and a wonderful partnership with landscape artist Bruce Walter, she was able to achieve a relaxing back yard escape with a New Orleans, French Quarter flair.
"I bring friends over all the time," she said. "Just the other night, I couldn't believe I stayed up with a friend talking until past ten o' clock at night. It's very comfortable."
Arant said she enjoys the pleasing aesthetic of her yard, but appreciates its less formal nature.
"I'm just tickled over it," she said. "I have been very blessed."
