MSU freshman Sword's arrest a misdemeanor

Mississippi State men's basketball freshman Craig Sword was arrested on Sunday afternoon on campus.

Sword was charged with possession of a firearm on an educational property, which would be a felony.

However, Sword didn’t actually have a firearm, he was in possession of a BB gun.

"I am aware of the situation involving Craig bringing a BB gun into the dorm, which is a misdemeanor,” said MSU men's basketball coach Rick Ray. “Craig did not point it at anyone or towards anyone.”

Sword and the MSU family are extremely aware of the sensitive nature of this crime and assure the public no harmful intent was initiated.

“Given recent events we are aware of the perception crimes involving firearms," said Jay Perry, who represents Sword. "Mr. Sword did not possess a shotgun, rifle, hand gun, or any type of firearm. He had a BB Gun, and while he regrets his action, at no point was anyone in danger.”

Sword and the Bulldogs will continue summer workouts with his teammates and will receive disciplinary action from Ray.

“Craig realizes the severity of his actions, is extremely remorseful and fully understands that he must be held accountable,” Ray said. “There will be disciplinary action carried out once I have all the facts and details."

The news concerning Sword was another blow to the MSU men's basketball offseason, which learned Tuesday that incoming freshman point guard Jacoby Davis will likely miss the season due to a torn ACL.
