Cadence CAO Mark Abernathy confirmed Friday both Starkville banking center President Marcus Mallory and Columbus banking center President Jim McAlexander resigned from their posts.
As a result, Abernathy said Mike Cayson was promoted to Starkville president and Doug Robertson was promoted to Columbus president.
The resignations follow 17 layoffs at the bank's Starkville operations center, which Abernathy confirmed Tuesday would take effect by the end of September. Abernathy said Tuesday these layoffs resulted from consolidation; the loan operations department at the Starkville center will move to and combine with its counterpart in the Birmingham, Ala. operations center.
The resignation announcement also comes less than nine hours after Columbus-Lowndes Development LINK CEO Joe Max Higgins’ office confirmed McAlexander would be part of a steering committee exploring avenues for a new Golden Triangle regional economic development agency.
Attempts to contact Mallory and McAlexander Friday directly went unreturned, and Abernathy and other Cadence representatives were unavailable for direct comment apart at this time, apart from an emailed statement from Abernathy.
In this statement, Abernathy said Mike Cayson brings 15 years of experience with Cadence Bank to his new position, serving as Starkville's Senior Commercial Banker for the past eight years.
"Prior to that, he served as president of the Monroe County Banking Center," Abernathy said in Friday's release. "Mike’s experience and knowledge of Starkville are true assets to our company, our customers and our community."
Robertson has held numerous roles at Cadence for the last 32 years, the release stated.
"He brings a deep experience to this new leadership role and will rely upon his extensive knowledge of our Columbus customers and their needs," Abernathy said in the release.
In his statement, Abernathy also acknowledged Mallory and McAlexander's contributions to Cadence.
"For the past 15 years, Marcus has performed admirably for the bank in various capacities including Cadence’s Chief Credit Officer and Mississippi Banking Executive," Abernathy said in the release. "Jim has successfully led the Columbus Banking Center in a variety of (roles) over the last 13 years, including Senior Credit Officer and Banking Center President. We are all appreciative of one another’s support over the years, and we wish Marcus and Jim well in their future endeavors."
