Butch Thompson and the Mississippi State Bulldogs pick up their 30th win of the season Tuesday night with a 6-3 midweek victory over the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State.

Ross Mitchell picked up his first career win while Adam Frazier earned the first four-hit performance of his career as the Bulldogs scored late to come away with the win.

“They gave us a good game and we knew they would, just like they did earlier in the year,” said Frazier, who was 4-for-5 for the game. “We had to just come back and score late like we always seem to do.”

MSU opened the scoring by striking for three runs in their first at-bat.
Frazier opened with his first of two doubles followed by a pair of walks to Tyler Fullerton and Mitch Slauter. Phillip Casey then plated the first run of the evening on a fielder’s choice that allowed Frazier to score from third.

The Bulldogs added two more Taylor Stark picked up his first extra base hit of the season with a triple to the wall in left.

MSU starter Will Cox held the Delta Devils (14-36) in check through the first two frames before they tied the game with three run in the third inning.

Ross Mitchell entered the game in the third and closed the door on MVSU by throwing 4.2 innings of one-hit baseball.

“He had movement, ground balls, and that was his longest outing of the year,” said Bulldog pitching coach Butch Thompson as he filled in for John Cohen, who was serving a one-game suspension. “A lot of that had to do with no one ever elevating the pitch. He had 48 pitches going into that last inning and just kind of showed his cards.”

The game remained tied at 3-3 until the seventh inning which began with Trey Porter being hit by a pitch. Stark then picked up his second hit of the evening with an infield single setting runners on the corners for Matthew Britton who singled to left to break the tie.

State’s starting centerfielder, Hunter Renfroe, reached after being hit by a pitch and Sam Frost picked up an RBI walk to give State the 5-3 lead. Frazier capped the scoring with an infield single which scored Stark from third.

“As a team we came around and just built off Sunday,” Frazier said of the Bulldogs who turned in 12 hits for the evening. “Hopefully, we can carry that into the weekend.”

Jacob Lindgren earned his first career save for the Bulldogs with two scoreless inning in relief.

The Bulldogs return to Southeastern Conference play on Friday night as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the No. 6 Florida Gators.
