The Starkville Community Market officially opens for the summer tomorrow at 7:30 a.m., and co-founder Jeremiah Dumas could not be more excited.
“It’s just fantastic,” he said. “It’s a great mixing of people and business within this community.”
Dumas said visitors to the market can expect some new items this year.
“There are things available that you just can’t find at a grocery store,” Dumas said.
Founded in 2008, the market has continued to grow and offer local vendors, artists and musicians a space to sell locally grown food and entertain residents.
“We were intentional with the name,” Dumas said. “The whole idea was to really emphasize the idea of community.”
The original location of the market was sectioned off on Lafayette Street. With the help of market organizers, Dylan Kargas, Mississippi State architecture students and Danny Coggins of Gulf State Manufacturers, the market’s new home on the former site of the East Mississippi Lumber Company boasts a pavilion, signage, retaining walls and railings.
Market director Mark Duncan said many people are looking forward to the opening.
“We’ve got our old vendors coming back, and we’re looking forward to new vendors joining us,” he said.
Alyson Kargas has been market manager for three years and works closely with the farmers and vendors who come to the market.
“We’ve got some new health department regulations this year,” Kargas said. “I’m proud of our vendors for taking the time out of their schedules to go through the certification needed under these new guidelines.”
While this weekend marks the opening, Kargas said the market’s biggest events are yet to come.
“One of our events will be June 9 when we host the Healthy Hometown Awards,” she said. “We’re all very excited about that.”
The Starkville Community Market is located at the corner of Jackson Street and Lampkin Street.
