Lady Jackets get easy softball win in three frames

April 12, 2012

The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets experienced a three-inning softball game Thursday they will not forget soon.

The Lady Jackets beat Weir 18-3 in three innings at the Starkville High School softball field.

"It feels good," SHS coach Wendy Jolly said of getting a win. "It's good for the girls to get a win because they have been working hard all season. It helped their confidence level a little bit to get a win like that."

The Lady Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the top of the first. The Lady Jackets answered with 10 runs with two outs and sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first.

The rally was highlighted by Dykia Robinson's two-run single, a passed ball that allowed three runners to score and Joeitta Buchanan's two-run double.

"That is something we have been battling all season, that first inning (letdown)," Jolly said. "We cut it down even though they scored three runs. They hung in there, got the three outs and answered with 10."

That 10-run first inning seem to inspire senior pitcher Shelby Knox as she struck out the side in the second inning and did not allow another run the rest of the game.

"It just gave me more room to have more confidence," Knox said. "The energy was up so we were ready to get the inning over with and have another chance at the plate."

The first inning has not really been Knox's friend this year. She knows that and always tries to push through and find it within herself to get over it.

"The first inning was a little shaky, but after I got my nerves down, I got it together and dug deep," Knox said.

Jolly knows Knox struggles in the first, but has always seen her battle and find a way to settle down.

"The first inning is not really her," Jolly said. "It's the defense as a whole making errors and not backing her up. She comes out every game throwing hard and giving 100 percent. She is real quiet, doesn't say a whole lot, but does her stuff on the mound. That is the way she answers."
The Jackets did not stop at the plate. They put up a six spot in the bottom of the second.

It was highlighted by Alexis Poe's RBI double.

The third inning was much of the same. A walk, a sacrifice bunt, a hit by pitch and a passed ball put runners on second and third for Shannon Lanier.

Lanier came in the ballgame in the bottom of the second and doubled to right field plating two to end the game due to a run rule.

The Lady Jackets are back in action today when they travel to Caledonia. Junior varsity is scheduled for 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6 p.m.
