Yellowjackets celebrate good season on lanes

The Starkville High School bowling program put a cap on an improved season with a quality celebration for what was accomplished.

SHS bowling coach Jim Philamlee said the end-of-the-year banquet held recently was better than the previous year and was a good way to give credit to those who made the season a success.

There were 53 people present at the banquet and the five senior Yellowjackets recognized for their contributions. The members of the boys team participated in the State Championships at Fannin Lanes in Flowood earlier this year.

Philamlee said SHS principal Keith Fennell was present along with athletic director Stan Miller, who made positive comments about the progress of the program.

"He talked about the bowling teams making a lot of improvements," Philamlee said. "One thing I'm really looking forward to is the junior varsity going up to varsity because I've been really impressed with them and much of that is due to parent support as far as buying equipment."

To help further the development of the bowling team, there are were upcoming opportunities discussed during the banquet.

There will be a youth/adult summer league on Thursday evenings that starts the week after school is dismissed and concludes one week prior to school starting back in the fall.

Also on April 23, Philamlee said the Jackets plan to hold their sports showcase, a time when various areas of the athletic program display what it has to offer studens.

"It gives us a time to sign up some bowlers," Philamlee said. "It takes place at the high school in the hallway and each sport has a booth set up. Last year was the first year I had done it, but I think we picked up maybe six to 12 bowlers from it."
