Jackets see 107 players show up for first spring practice

April 2, 2012

The first day of spring football practice at Starkville High School was met with much anticipation and enthusiasm.

With a total of 107 players available for the opening of drills, the interest that exists in wanting to become Yellowjackets is evident.

SHS football coach Jamie Mitchell was happy to see the participation, but did say that it comes with certain challenges.

"That's a big, big number to get organized and where they are supposed to be going," Mitchell said. "The biggest thing was to get them moving where they are supposed to go and it's a big traffic jam when you've got that many kids.

"I think after (Monday), they kind of understand the tempo and some of them were wide-eyed and shocked a little bit, but Wednesday will be a whole lot better because of the experience of being out there (Monday)."

Quarterback Gabe Myles enjoyed the feeling of being back on the football field again and said the first day of practice was met with some hard-hitting.

Myles said the younger players in the program were getting adjusted to the Jacket way.

"They are finally noticing that you've got to bring it to be successful," Myles said. "It was a good day of practice and I think we've got things accomplished and figured out who wants to play football. It should get better as the spring continues."

Mitchell called the practice "high-energy" and "upbeat" and if he were to give a grade, it would be a B.

"We had some good contact and anytime we can get out there and strap it up, it's a good day," Mitchell said.

Even though he did not participate in any contact, linebacker David Fair was able to do some running for the first time.

It was the first time Fair has done anything since a knee injury suffered against Tupelo last season.

"I was running for everything," Fair said. "We didn't have to run plays, but I was just running, just because I could run. It felt good."

The Jackets return to the practice field on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
