March 30, 2012

PHILADELPHIA – The Starkville High School baseball team put itself in a comfortable position looking to the playoffs.

The Yellowjackets beat the Neshoba Central Rockets in a Class 5A, Region 3, District 4 game for the second time this week 12-9, but this time they did it on the road.

SHS beat the Rockets 3-2 on Tuesday on a walk-off double by Nathan Pugh.
Pugh pitched six innings on Friday giving up six hits, walking five batters and striking out six. He also had two doubles and drove in a run.
The Jackets grabbed an early 2-0 lead after opening the game with two runs in the first inning. The Rockets tied the ballgame in the bottom of the second.

That tie didn't last long, as the Yellowjackets struck for six runs in the top of the third.

Neshoba pulled within three at 8-5 when they put up a three spot in the bottom of the fifth inning. That score stood until the top of seventh inning.

The Jackets added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh and needed them as the Rockets scored four runs of their own in the bottom half.

Harper Day had four RBI. Max Bartlett had three hits, one being a double, and drove in a run. Nick Brooks had a double.

SHS improved to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in district play. The Jackets are back in action today against Tupelo at home at 11 a.m. and Winona at approximately 4 p.m.
