The Starkville High School boys golf team is very close to breaking out and making a nice little run.
"We have been in every match," SHS coach Sam Bryant said. "We just have to turn that corner and get the win. I think when we get the confidence, we are going to be pretty tough to stop. I think we can roll with it."
The Yellowjackets finished in second place with a 182 at the Mississippi State Golf Course on Monday a match against Kosciusko, East Webster and West Point.
Kosciusko took first place with a score of 160. Holden Singletary of the Whippets won medalist with a 2-over 38.
East Webster took third place with a 217 and West Point finished fourth with a 225. Colby Williamson led the Wolverines with a 49.
The Yellowjackets were led by seniors Ryan Lacy and Logan Maddox who both shot a 5-over 41. Bryant is glad they have been consistent all year.
"Those two guys are our strengths," Bryant said. "They are our two go-to guys. They are neck and neck match in and match out. Their scores I can always count on. They are always going to be around 40. They are a model of consistency. They have been quality guys. They have grown up with it and they are what you look for in a high school golfer."
Maddox's round started out well, but he struggled midway through and and caused him to finish in the 40s.
"It started out OK but it went down hill during the middle part," Maddox said. "A few bad shots. It just went down hill from there."
Bryant heard a lot of his players were struggling on the greens. That was really not the case for Maddox who thought the greens saved him.
"My putting was OK," Maddox said. "I did usually manage to save it on the green when I got on the green."
Bryant believes his team is capable of a lot lower score than what it showed on Monday. Most of his players had one bad hole that really escalated their scores.
"Really thought we should have shot better as a team," Bryant said. "We are having that hole or two where they blow up and that escalates their scores. If we can minimize those holes as a team, our score is going to drop drastically. Not totally disappointed with (a 180), but I think we are closer to a 160 maybe 165 as a team."
The competition the Jackets faced is something Bryant hopes lights a fire under his players for the rest of the year.
"Kosciusko is going to be a strong contender for a 3A state championship," Bryant said. "I think we are going to be a strong contender in 5A. We just have to hone those skills."
The Lady Yellowjackets came in second place with a 105. West Point took first place with a 103 and East Webster took third with a score of 119.
Freshman Kristen Lacy led the Lady Jackets with a 52. It was only her sixth time to play and it was her first to finish under 60.
She parred the par five seventh hole, the par three eighth hole and the par four ninth hole to end her match.
Lacy gave enough for SHS coach Angela Hobart to say "I'm really, really proud of her."
The Jackets will be back in action Thursday at the MSU Golf Course. Teams competing will be Ackerman, New Hope and Oxford.View more articles in:
