The Starkville High School girls' and boys' track and field teams have the luxury of not having to travel very far to compete in their next meet.
The Yellowjackets and Lady Yellowjackets will compete in the Mississippi State Invitational Saturday at the Maddox Track located on the campus of MSU.
The field events are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. and the running events at 11 a.m.
There will be 92 teams competing between boys and girls teams with over 1,400 athletes.
SHS boys' coach Chris Barnett is glad the squad is participating in MSU's event because it gives the people of Starkville a chance to check out his team and see what they are all about.
"It gives us a chance to show the people here in Starkville what type of team we have as far as this year," Barnett said. "Our previous meets have been down in Pearl. It gives Starkville a chance to see what our track season is all about. It gives the community in general as a whole to see a very good track meet."
Barnett was quick to mention Gabe Myles and Jalan Catledge as two players he has confidence in and loves to see compete.
For Barnett and his athletes, this a meet they look forward to and love competing in.
"We have prepared as well as we could have," Barnett said. "I think our kids will step up to the plate, especially with it being at (MSU). Our kids enjoy being able to go to this meet."
For girls' head coach Caroline Woomer, she considers this to be a home meet because it is so close. The Jackets don't get to host an event so this is a big deal to her and her team.
"It is very exciting," Woomer said. "We consider this our home meet. This is when their family and their friends can come to see them run."
For Woomer, she has a very young team. She has moved Aleah Watt, Taylor Rogers and Emily Woomer up from junior hight to compete at the high school level.
"They're young, but they work hard," Woomer said.
Junior Janna Gandy will run in the 400-meter relay and the 800-meter relay.
Woomer is really excited about Katie Mattox, Mary Elizabeth Stringer and Walker Mattox who are the distance runners.
"We are really looking forward to the competition on Saturday," Barnett said. "Our kids love this meet."View more articles in:
