This season proved to be another step in the progression of the Starkville High School bowling team.

For the first time, the Yellowjackets were represented by the boys team at the State Bowling Championships and benefitted from the experience.

"I thought we did pretty good," SHS bowling coach Jim Philamlee said. "Two of the guys were nervous. We had a guy there for the first time and he just did outstanding. We had three bad games and in a tournament like that, you can't have three bad games. The competition at our level is a lot harder than Class 1. All in all, I thought things went well."

The Jackets experienced four injuries with two thumbs, one ankle and one finger that hampered their efforts in the state meet.

Philamlee believes the experience for the bowlers returning added in the younger participants coming up should make SHS stronger in the sport.

"We've got some 6th graders coming up in Seth Prewitt and our 7th graders will be 8th graders with one year of experience and that helps a lot," Philamlee said. "We've got some ideas this fall. You live and learn and we're going to do a couple of things a little different."

As the Jackets qualified for the state meet as a wild-card out of regionals, Philamlee was pleased with the amount of support the team received as it reached new heights.

"We had a lot of support from the high school in sending us off from the superintendent's office, the teachers, counselors and principal," Philamlee said. "We had 20 or so spectators that came to see us. I've gotten all kinds of phone calls.

"The kids really enjoyed it so I'm real pleased."
