The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets wanted to take control of Thursday's match early.

After losing a tough 2-1 decision at New Hope on Wednesday night, the Lady Jackets were intent on getting off to a fast start against the Neshoba Central Rockets.

Starkville did that as Noa Hardin scored two early goals and it went on to a 5-0 victory at Yellowjacket Stadium.

"(Wednesday night) was definitely a heartbreaker, but they rebounded," SHS girls coach Anna Albritton said. "Sometimes it takes something like (the New Hope loss) to get you back on track. Not that we played bad, I thought we were the better team and we possessed the ball 90 percent of the time. We just couldn't finish."

The Lady Jackets did a much better job of that against Neshoba Central.
After Hardin's goals, Carolina Berryhill finished up the first half with a score as Starkville took a 3-0 lead at halftime.

"We wanted to come out strong and our coach always says that the team that wins possession in the first 5 minutes is probably the team that's going to win," Hardin said. "Coming in after a New Hope loss which was kind of depressing, we really wanted to come out strong and we did that."

Anna Underwood opened the second half with a goal in front of the net for the Lady Jackets to increase the margin to 4-0 and Berryhill put the finishing touches on the win at the 34-minute mark.

Albritton was glad the squad was able to put on a good show at home, which was the first match held at Yellowjacket Stadium.

"The rain has been an issue because you can't come out here and play when it's slick," Albritton said. "It's disappointing we haven't played as many games and we need to do something about that because the season is in winter."

Starkville improved its records to 9-4-1 overall and 2-1 in Class 5A, Region 2.

The Lady Jackets have an opportunity at revenge against New Hope tonight as they host the Lady Trojans with Wednesday's loss still fresh on their minds.

"We're planning on getting them this time," Hardin said. "We got them at home last year and we're planning on doing it again this year."
