SENATOBIA â€“ The Starkville Academy Volunteers have played their way into the finals of the Magnolia Heights Classic and the latest step came Thursday night with a 40-39 victory against Hernando.
"This is one of the best wins I've been a part of," SA boys coach Mark Alexander said. "Our guys did a great job of following the game plan and we came up with the big plays when we needed to."
After taking a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Vols extended the margin to 22-16 by halftime.
Starkville Academy pushed its advantage to 30-22 at the end of the third quarter and held on for the win despite being out-scored by Hernando 17-10 in the fourth quarter.
Austin Kinard and Kyle Loman led the Vols with nine points each, while Carnail Minor was next in the scoring column with eight points.
Starkville Academy, which improved its record to 6-8, plays Desoto Central at 7:15 p.m.

SENATOBIA â€“ The Lady Vols also punched their ticket to the finals of the Magnolia Heights Classic with an easy win.
Starkville Academy, which improved 15-2, jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and extended the gap to 39-23 at halftime.
The Vols dominated the second half, out-scoring Desoto Central 33-14 in the third and fourth quarters.
There were four SA players to score in double digits as Julianne Jackson had 17 points, Anna Lea Little got 16 points, Sallie Kate Richardson added 14 points and Tiffany Huddleston chipped in 11 points.
Jackson, Little and Richardson completed double-doubles with 12, 12 and 10 rebounds respectively.
The Lady Vols play Southaven in the finals at 6 p.m.
