CANTON â€“ The No. 1 ranked Starkville Yellowjackets got off to a slow start in division action on the road Tuesday night, but got in gear as the game progressed and went on to secure an 82-63 win against Canton.
Starkville, which improved to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 5A, Region 2, held a 21-19 lead after the first quarter. The Jackets extended the margin to 47-38 by halftime.
After Canton cut the score to 63-54 at the end of the third quarter, SHS had a big fourth quarter to close out the outing.
Jacolby Mobley led four Jackets in double-figure scoring with 35 points. He also had eight assists.
Gavin Ware and Tori Rice recorded double-doubles. Ware, a Mississippi State signee, had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Rice added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Brand was the other SHS player to score in double figures with 15 points.
Steve Brand only had four points, but had seven rebounds and seven assists for the Jackets.
Starkville's next action will be at the Joe Horne Classic in Columbus on Friday. The Jackets play Provine in a game not scheduled to begin until 8:20 p.m.
CANTON â€“ The Lady Yellowjackets dropped a disappointing decision, but coach Kristie Williams was proud of the effort.
"We had a shot at the end," Williams said. "We didn't lose the game because we didn't play hard."
Canton jumped out to an 11-6 lead after the first quarter, but SHS out-scored its host 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 23-18 advantage at halftime.
"Early on, we were not rebounding, but as the game went on, we picked up our intensity on the boards," Williams said.
The Lady Jackets were out-scored in the second half 34-28.
Brittany Brown led Starkville with 14 points, while Jacqueline Fair added 13 points and Imane Montgomery also scored in double digits with 11 points.
The Lady Jackets, who saw their records fall to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in Class 5A, Region 2, play on Friday at the Joe Horne Christmas Classic in Columbus. The opponent will be Lawrence County at 3 p.m.
