From Staff Reports
MERIDIAN – One night after dominating Grenada at home, the Starkville Yellowjackets had another big offensive game against Lanier at the Meridian Wildcat Classic.
The Jackets didn't rely on one player to get the job done against the Bulldogs as they had six players scoring in double digits in the 84-58 win.
Gavin Ware and Tori Rice both picked up double-doubles with points and rebounds and Steve Brand missed a double-double of his own by two boards. Ware led SHS (10-0) with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Brand followed with 16 points and eight boards. Rice put up 14 points and picked up 11 rebounds for his double-double.
Jacolby Mobley added 13 points and Mike Brand and Tay Gandy put in 10 points each.
The offensive explosion wasn't a surprise coming from the No. 1 team in the state, but they expected the Bulldogs to come out of the gate with a lot of pressure. When that didn't happen, the Jackets threw the ball down low and spread it around to take a 10-point lead in the first quarter. By halftime, Starkville was leading by 25 and they rolled through the second half to get the win.
The Jackets travel to Canton on Tuesday for action within the division.
