RIDGELAND – Coach Jamie Mitchell came to Starkville with the plan to get the program back in a position to where it's winning state championships.
In only his second season with the Yellowjackets, Mitchell has them playing for the Class 5A State title next week.
Starkville defeated Ridgeland 28-7 Friday night to claim the North 5A crown and will play Picayune next Saturday for the state championship.
It's the first time the Jackets have played for a state title since winning it in 2001 and this will be Mitchell's first time to play for one as a head coach.
"I'm so proud of Starkville and so proud of our kids," Mitchell said. "I've been chasing this for a long time. This is my first time to go to Jackson as a head coach. This is a dream come true."
Mitchell appears to have brought back the winning ways much to the delight of Starkville High School principal Keith Fennell.
"It's an outstanding accomplishment," said Fennell. "They put forth the effort to come out on top and Coach Mitchell and his staff made the adjustments they had to at halftime to get the win."
After winning the North State, Mitchell improved to 17-8 overall in his two years at the helm of the Jackets.
The reason for that is believed by many to come from him getting the players to believe in what he's doing.
"He brings energy and a spark and the kids believe in him," said Fennell. "They bought into his system and by doing that you get the success we have now and I sure am proud of them."
Fennell ran over to Mitchell after Friday night's win and kissed him on top of the head.
This isn't the first time he has done that according to Fennell and he says he plans on doing it one more time this season.
