Officers await DNA tests from Sept. 12 attack

October 19, 2011

The Starkville Police Department is awaiting DNA test results which could link a suspect to the Sept. 12 attack and attempted rape of a female jogger.
SPD Chief David Lindley said the department developed a potential suspect early in the investigation. DNA samples were taken from the victim on the night of the attack, and a search warrant was used to acquire samples from the suspect.
“We developed a suspect early on and felt like we collected some usable DNA from the victim. We sent that for analysis to determine if it was usable,” Lindley said. “After we developed a possible suspect, we took DNA from that suspect.”
SPD Detective Josh Buckner said test results could be back at the department by the end of the week. Buckner would not comment on the type of evidence under review.
Lindley would not comment further on the investigation since it’s “at its most critical point.”
The attack occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. Sept. 12 on University Drive near Old West Point Road. The victim reported that while she was jogging in the vicinity of Jarnigan Street, she observed a black male wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt walking on the road. The individual then chased her down and attacked near the bridge close to Fire Station No. 1.
The victim escaped her attacker and alerted a passing motorist. She was driven to the police department. The attacker was last seen running east on University Drive.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call SPD at (662) 323-4131, the Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151 or MSUPD at (662) 325-2121.
