Vols crush rival Patriots on road

LOUISVILLE – Quarterback Drew Pellum accounted for five touchdowns, three rushing and two passing, on Friday night to lead the Starkville Academy Volunteers to a 55-12 win against the Winston Academy Patriots.
Starkville Academy, which improved its overall record to 8-1, took a 14-6 advantage after the first quarter and extended the margin to 34-12 by halftime.
Pellum rushed 15 times for 144 yards for the Vols and completed both of his pass attempts for 45 yards. He had touchdown runs of 1, 1 and 61 and added touchdown passes of 8 yards to Hunter Bolin and 10 yards to Ryan McKell.
Ryan Mann, who had another 100-yard rushing effort for SA, had a 15-yard run touchdown in the second quarter. Mann had 115 yards on nine carries.
The other touchdowns for the Vols were a 4-yard run by Colby Runnels and a 17-yard run by Zach Slaughter.
Starkville Academy had 423 yards of total offense and limited Winston Academy to just 176 total yards.
Angus Catchot, Jordan Bright and Tripp Janssen were the defensive leaders for the Vols.
It will be a battle for home-field advantage in Class AAA-District II next Friday when Starkville Academy hosts East Rankin Academy.
