Visit Maben Farmers’ Market through October

September 20, 2011

For Starkville Daily News

The refreshing chill of autumn was felt at the Maben market on Friday.
Sweaters and jackets were evident as the vendors set up their wares and the shoppers arrived at 7 a.m. to get the first choice of tomatoes, jellies, salsa and pickles from Lancaster Farms or turnip, mustard and kale greens, fresh pears, and sweet potatoes from William Shaw.
The Hummus Lady was ready to sell her special hummus, pita bread, spice and chocolate-mint cakes, and baklava, and Leola Mason was on hand with her caramel cakes, apple cakes and red velvet cakes as well as fried pies.
Ted Cole was there with his new bird houses that were painted with a cat’s face, Cynthia Williams brought her colorful home décor and Ann Jackson displayed her magnetic jewelry. And, of course, Fulgham’s pork skins were available in mild and hot flavors.
Shopping was robust and spirits were high as folks enjoyed the experience of visiting with friends and neighbors at this weekly gathering. Some folks were new to the market and were happy they had made the effort to get out early to find the best items. Volunteers were on hand to help vendors set up, and to hand out shopping sheets to keep up with their purchases for the drawing. Music came across the lot and kept things lively.
The festive feeling led the organizers to plan to keep the market open until October 29, so come join us and take home the fruits of the fall. New vendors are encouraged to register with us. There is no cost to vendors.
The drawing at 9:30 a.m. was won by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Breland of Clarkson community. Nicky Lewis of Maben drew the wining ticket worth $30, which was mailed to the excited couple. They had shopped early and gone on to take care of the business of the day. While at the market Mrs. Breland had asked about the Christi Wilson’s goat milk soap that is sometimes available at the market and the honey from Dr. Eaddy.
Even though all of our vendors are not always here you can get contact information for them from us. Winners who are present for the drawing win $50. Come out next week to shop with us in Maben on the lot next to the Post Office, and for every $5 you spend with the vendors you will have a chance to win in the drawing.
