Starkville QB Club set for 46th season

Mississippi State University football fans anticipating the 2011 season are encouraged to join the Starkville Quarterback Club this fall.
The club, which opens its 46th season of weekly meetings on August 30, is devoted to promoting MSU football throughout the season, and 2011 Club President Brent Deweese said the club is expecting a large membership this year with all the excitement that surrounded last year’s 9-4 season that culminated with a 52-14 win over Michigan in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, and the anticipation for another successful season.
“If you are a MSU football fan, the Starkville Quarterback Club is the place for you,” DeWeese said.
Each week, an assistant football coach will give a scouting report on the opposing team and an update on MSU’s team.
“These scouting reports and updates are a tremendous perk to being a member of the Starkville Quarterback Club,” Deweese said. “These coaches provide inside information about opposing teams and MSU’s game preparation that is not available through any media outlets.”
The coach’s reports are followed by a primary speaker for the evening. The club works closely with MSU’s athletic department in lining up speakers.
Deweese said MSU head coach Dan Mullen will be the keynote speaker at the first meeting on Aug. 30. Head basketball coach Rick Stansbury and head baseball coach John Cohen are also scheduled to update club members on their respective team outlooks. MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin will speak one week, and other outstanding sports authorities, including members of ESPN’s announcing teams, are being contacted.
Deweese said the awarding of door prizes each week is popular with club members. A helmet autographed by all of the season’s speakers is given away at the last gathering of the year. In addition, a wide variety of MSU Bulldog apparel, accessories, tailgate supplies and football-related items are given away each week.
“We gave away more than $3,000 worth of door prizes last year, and we will do likewise this season,” Deweese said.
The club meets on Thursday nights during football season at the Starkville Country Club, except on weeks when there’s a Thursday night game, when meetings are held on Tuesdays. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by a meal, door prizes and speakers beginning at 7 p.m. Deweese said Quarterback Club dues for 2011 remain unchanged from 2010. Membership is $125 for the season, and for an additional $60, members are provided a meal that includes a meat (a weekly rotation of fried catfish filets, fried chicken, hamburger steaks and pork chops), two vegetables, salad, bread, drink and dessert for each of the 12 meetings.
Deweese said that represents a bargain at $5 per meal. Deweese also emphasized Quarterback Club members do not have to be members of Starkville Country Club.
Many local businesses, banks, law firms and physicians assist the club as sponsors each year. These sponsors will be recognized each week as meetings are announced.
Membership information has already been mailed to last year’s members. Deweese urged everyone to return his or her registration form as soon as possible. Deweese encouraged football fans who have not been members before and former members to join this year. Potential members and sponsors who have not received information by mail or e-mail may go online at and print a registration form to mail in.
“The Starkville Quarterback Club meetings are a great way to start the football weekend,” Deweese said. “We welcome all MSU football fans to join us."
