CANTON – The Starkville High volleyball team couldn't have scripted a better opening to their division slate.
Opening up district play in Canton Saturday as part of a district tri-match, the Lady Yellowjackets defeated both Canton and Yazoo City in straight sets.
Starkville (5-4 overall, 2-0 in division play) downed Canton 25-9, 25-11 and 25-12 to start the day, then followed that up by beating Yazoo City 25-5, 25-10 and 25-10.
"We played well," said SHS head coach Lauren Love. "We needed to take care of our side, and we did and it was good to get those two district wins.
"We were able to do better with our serving game and we were able to get on some long scoring runs. We were able to stay focused after a long Saturday morning bus ride, got in the gym and took care of what we needed to do."
Facing Canton, Khristian Carr paced Starkville with 11 kills and 10 aces. Wheeler Richardson added 12 aces and three digs for SHS, while April Reese aided the winning cause with six kills.
Against Yazoo City, Richardson and Margaret Allison led the Lady Jackets with seven aces apiece. Vicky Vo added six aces.
Michaela Mills and Jamiyah Covington led SHS in digs against Yazoo City with three each.
After Saturday's two wins, Starkville has now won four of its last five matches.
The Lady Jackets will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday when they travel to Amory, where the action will begin with a junior varsity match at 5:30 p.m.
