ACKERMAN – In a back-and-forth battle, Ackerman recorded a home victory over Noxapater Friday night, turning back the Tigers 36-33 in each teams' season opener.
"We told the kids how proud we were of their effort," said Ackerman head coach Adam Dillinger. "We were proud of how we stuck with everything. When things did go wrong, the guys just kept playing and found a way to win."
The victory was Ackerman's first since defeating Starkville Academy in the opening game of the 2010 season.
Ackerman was led offensively by senior running back K.J. Woods who carried the ball 24 times for 183 yards and four touchdowns.
Indians quarterback Dakota Brasher also excelled in the running game, racking up 106 yards on 17 carries.
Brasher also went 4-of-7 through the air with 79 yards passing.
Ackerman will look to keep things rolling next Friday when the Indians travel to Winona.
"We'll have to play better next week," said Dillinger. "We're going to have to tackle better, play better defensively. We can't give up 33 points a night and expect to win very many ballgames.
"We're young on defense, but we think we're going to get better every week on that side."
