Lady Jackets drop matches in Ridgeland

August 6, 2011

Starkville High

From Staff Reports

RIDGELAND – The Starkville High volleyball team couldn't find the win column in their first two matches of the 2011 campaign on Friday, but head coach Lauren Love still saw plenty of reason for optimism.
While SHS fell in straight sets to both Our Lady Academy and DeSoto Central as part of the season-opening Set It Off Challenge at Ridgeland High School, Love says her team played much better than the results indicated.
"There are three things that we can control and that's our attitude, our communication and our effort," said Love. "We didn't have those things (against Our Lady Academy), but (against DeSoto Central), we came out and everyone took care of those things. We got better every play."
Our Lady Academy topped Starkville 25-10 and 25-13 in the Lady Jackets' first match before DeSoto Central topped SHS 25-21 and 25-14.
Against Our Lady Academy, April Reese tallied seven points and four digs for SHS, while Khristian Carr added seven kills and three digs. Wheeler Richardson recorded six assists and four digs for the Lady Jackets.
Against DeSoto Central, Richardson notched six points, six assists, five digs, two aces and two kills. Carr had eight digs and four kills, while Reese had three aces in defeat.
Richardson, Carr, Reese and the rest of the Lady Jackets will look to rebound today as the Set It Off Challenge continues.
SHS will play in another pair of matches in Ridgeland, with the first coming at 10 a.m. against Jim Hill. If Starkville wins that contest, the Lady Jackets will play again at 11 a.m. A loss in the day's first match would set up a noon match for SHS.
