In announcing his candidacy for District 1 Supervisor, John P. Montgomery made the following statement:
âMy name is John P. Montgomery, Jr. I am married to Melissa Wolfe Montgomery, and I have two children, Madeline and Nathan. I was born and raised in Oktibbeha County. I am the son of Brenda Chambliss and Prate Montgomery and my in-laws are Albert and Donna Wolfe. I am a graduate of Mississippi State University. My Bachelorâs Degree is in business administration with emphasis in risk management, insurance, and financial planning. I am a member of First Baptist Church of Starkville.
âI am seeking the position of Supervisor District 1 because I believe that local government â at the grassroots level â has the potential to make a huge, positive impact on the community. Supervisors serve as the âvoiceâ of citizens who trust and place confidence in them. Every decision made by elected officials impacts every family in the community one way or another so every decision needs to be a good one.
âI would like to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our local government and the services provided to you, the citizens. Overall, I want to work to help better the welfare of our community.
âI have worked for the city of Starkville for 11 years at the Starkville Fire Department. My job is rooted in serving the community in a number of ways. Fighting fires, helping meet peopleâs emergency medical needs, teaching school-age children fire safety skills and other work in the community are a few of the responsibilities of the job. I also own a local, small business â Montgomery Lawn Maintenance â and I employ and serve Oktibbeha County citizens. I pay taxes and I support local businesses.
âAs you know, the decisions that the County Board of Supervisors make are significant. The management of tax dollars and all financial decisions are a top priority. I am conscious of the tax burden carried by citizens. I am a small business owner and I know first-hand that it is important for elected officials to develop an accurate budget and aim to get the maximum value from every penny spent to meet the publicâs needs.
âEconomic development is a critical priority. I want to help make decisions that will attract commercial and industrial development into the county. We need to continue to evaluate how to attract and retain small and large businesses in our area. This is an ongoing task for university, city and county leaders to continue to work on together.
âDecisions related to health and public welfare are always a priority. The maintenance of roads and bridges, public facilities and drainage systems are also important, and matters concerning ordinances need to continue to be evaluated.
âThese are difficult economic times and there are many challenges that relate mainly to taxes and finances. Improving education, roads, county services and industrial development all come at a significant cost. Our county operates on a limited budget and I feel that the best way to face challenges is for the board of supervisors to have a clearly defined strategy in place and always utilize revenue responsibly.
âThere is plenty of potential for growth in Oktibbeha County. Having a state-supported four-year university puts our county in a great position. Enrollment at Mississippi State University has increased every year which indicates a number of positive things for the entire community. We need to capitalize on the resources and visibility that the university brings to us. County, city and university officials need to continue to improve communications and efforts amongst each other to make strategic decisions that strengthen the economic development in our area.
âFulfilling a vision and achieving goals requires teamwork and an open mind. If you vote for me as District 1 Supervisor, I will make a positive impact on the community by making careful decisions. I will encourage community involvement and I will always represent my neighbors in an honest and professional manner.
âThank you for your support.â
