The deadline for voter registration for Aug. 2 primaries is noon Saturday, and Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis wants current and potential voters to be aware of the upcoming date.
“We’ve not had an unusual number of voters coming to register, but we’ve definitely had a steady flow of people this week,” she said.
If a voter wishes to register at the circuit clerk’s office, McGinnis said he or she will need to show his or her driver’s license or be able to give the last four digits of his or her social security number. If a voter chooses to register via mail-in form, he or she must enclose a copy of his or her driver’s license or a copy of a bill proving his or her physical address.
“The mail-in form needs to be postmarked by July 3, but I would caution people to have it mailed Saturday, July 2, because local area post offices do not open on Sundays,” McGinnis said.
If a voter cannot be verified through the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, then he or she will have to provide proper identification at the ballot.
Even registered voters should be mindful of the approaching deadline. McGinnis said registered voters who have moved should keep their information up to date and can do so before the deadline.
Sample ballots have been posted at the circuit clerk’s office for public examination before the Aug. 2 primary.
“I encourage everyone to find out as much information on the candidates as they can before voting,” McGinnis said.
