Gardening books available at Starkville Public Library

For Starkville Daily News

Traditionally the Starkville Town and Country Garden Club takes a break from monthly meetings in the heat of the summer.
However, that does not mean the ladies are not working, after all, this is summer and gardeners in Starkville are busy.
National Garden Week, held June 5-11, was celebrated by the club with a donation of the beautiful book, “Private Gardens of Georgia” written by Polly McLeod Mattox and Helen Mattox Bost .
Susan Street, Imogene Triplett, Jane Loveless and Anita Reynolds also put together a lovely garden display near the front door of the library which features gardening books and Imogene Triplett’s stunning bromeliad plants.
Imogene Triplett said she became fascinated with the plants when she first went to Brazil.  Her plants are unusual with dramatic variety in both the leaves and flowers. Some leaves have vertical stripped leaves while others have horizontal stripes the flowers are very colorful.
The plants have names like Friendship, Red Hot Poker and Fingernail. They can grow on the side of rocky cliffs and should be watered within the cup found in the center of the plant, not in the dirt where planted, explained Mrs. Triplett.
One book she recommends is “Bromeliads for the Contemporary Garden” by Andrew Steens, a wonderful reference book for reading more about bromeliads.
