Fathers matter in life

June 4, 2011

The month of June has been declared as Fatherhood month to let us know that Fathers Matter. There is no question that children who grow up in fatherless homes have a much greater risk of major challenges in life than those who grow up with a father at home.
1. Fathers are important — Let us look at the fatherless homes. The importance of fathers is demonstrated by what occurs when fathers aren’t in the home. Studies shows that children who grow up in fatherless homes are more likely to drop out of high school, suffer from poverty, receive welfare, marry early, have children out of wedlock, divorce, commit delinquent acts, and engage in drug and alcohol activities.
2. Fathering is a learned skill — effective fathering must be learned. Being responsible is a key element. Fathering skills don’t automatically accompany that Y chromosome your dad gave to you. Hopefully your dad showed some good examples for you to follow by the way he communicated with your mother as well as others.
3. Fathering has great rewards — While effective fathering is overwhelmingly important and often requires rigorous training, it also bears significant rewards. Every father knows there are times of great pain, anguish, confusion and inadequacy. Every father struggles with keeping work, self and family in balance. Fathers who have great relationships with their children have learned to express love in meaningful ways. They find little ways to express love, and they do it every day when the kids are living at home. For the month of June I will ignite you with several Powerful Principles for being a successful father. You could never become a perfect father but, you will be better. Remember the seed we plant will determine the crop that we raise.
