Shockwave coach Robert Gonzalez cares about swimmers of this area so much that he wants to expose them to the best instruction possible.
When it came to finding someone to run the two sessions of a stroke clinic, Gonzalez brought in someone who knows a thing or two about the activity.
Mark Garrigues, a first-team All-American freestyle swimmer from South Dakota State, will teach what he knows during the clinic that takes place Monday through June 16 and June 20-30 at the Sanderson Center.
"Coach Mark has a lot of background experience so I'd like to think our lessons are a little more advanced than maybe some of the other programs in Starkville or elsewhere," Gonzalez said. "Luckily we've got him here a couple of years while he's in grad school in the Forestry department at State. We lose him at the end of the summer so we're trying to get all we can out of him this last season he's here."
Garrigues spent his prep swimming career in the state of Washington.
The sessions of the stroke clinic take place Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. The fee is $35 and all equipment will be provided.
Gonzalez said the purpose of the clinic is to get beginner swimmers prepared to join a program of their choice.
"It's the transitional stage for beginner swimmers who are looking to expand their swimming ability and are looking to join a swim team whether it be the Shockwave Swim Team, Starkville High School or Starkville Academy," Gonzalez said. "It gives them the opportunity to improve their techniques in a more controlled environment."
Swimmers can register on site if there are spots still available, but anyone interested can contact Gonzalez at 662-574-9010 or shockwavecoach@yahoo.com.
