Dr. Joann Vicks

COLUMBUS — Funeral services for Dr. Joann Vicks will be at 1 p.m. May 20, at Second Baptist Church in Starkville, with  Rev. Joseph Stone  officiating.
Burial will be at Odd Fellow Cemetery in Starkville with Century Harriston Funeral Home of Columbus in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 19, at Second Baptist Church in Starkville.
Dr. Vicks, 72, of Starkville, died May 12, 2011, at Regency Hospital in Meridian.
Dr. Vicks was born November 3, 1938 in Starkville, Oktibbeha County She was the daughter of Ms. Rosella Perkins, who proceeded her in death.
She began her teaching career in 1961 at Moor High School (East Oktibbeha High) in Crawford, and taught biology, chemistry and mathematics. She later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, teaching physical science at John Hay High School for six years. Later moving back to Mississippi as Assistant professor of biology at Mary Holmes College and served as advisor to the Student Christian Association and chaired the mathematics and natural sciences department.  Later she retired from East Mississippi Community College, Golden Triangle as adjunct professor for more than several years. 
Her Christian journey started at Second Baptist Church and later joined Griffin United Methodist Church and Maranatha Faith Center. Later Dr. Vicks returned to Second Baptist Church. During her adult life at Second Baptist she served as Director of Music department, member of the sanctuary choir, missionary ministry teacher, and pianist for children choir and male chorus. 
While a member at Maranatha Faith Center from 1984-1985, she received her missionary training at Interdenominational School of Ministry in Columbus.  Further studies were at Ministerial Institute and College in West Point, and the Baptist and State and District Congresses of Northeast Mississippi.
Her ministries include teaching in the Northeast Mississippi Baptist State Congress and the Mount Olivet District Congress. Dr. Vicks was ordained as Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on May 30, 1993.
Dr. Vicks leaves to cherish her memories, her sisters, Jacqueline Vicks, Thelma Devine, Lynn Hughes and Janice Williams, all of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Verlene King of Benicia, Calif.; brothers, Ruldolph Vick of Starkville, Walter Vick of Milwaukee, Wisc., Lou James Hughes of Plainville, N.J., James Harrington of Lithonia, Ga.; a devoted cousin, Marvin Perkins of Decatur, Ga.; cousin, June Perkins of Cleveland Ohio; uncles, James E. Perkins of Starkville, Charles Perkins of Los Angeles, Calif.; goddaughter, Rachel Thompson; an adopted sister, Marie Wilkerson; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and a loving church family. 
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons and trustees of Second Baptist Church in Starkville.
Active pallbearers will be LeRoi Dunbar, DeCarlos Hill, Michael Johnson, David Nichols, Rev. Ron Jefferson and Deacon Eddie Myles.
Honorary flower bearers will be the members of Delta Sigma Theta, OCTS Class of 1957 and the former faculty of Mary Holmes College.
Active flower bearers will be members of the Sanctuary Choir and Deaconess of Second Baptist Church.
To our many neighbors, friends, and the community we say thank you, for this too will pass, our weeping will only endure for a night, and we know that joy will come in the morning.  Your kind words, cards and acts of kindness have been a source of strengths and comfort during our time of comfort during our time of sorrow. May God forever keep and bless each of you.
