Board may fill vacancy for constable

Oktibbeha County supervisors will consider an appointment today to fill the District 1 constable’s post following the death of Jimmy Shurden.
Shurden, 68, died April 19. He did not seek re-election to the office leading up to the August primary and general election in November.
Earlier this month, Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis said she had reviewed the law and though a special election will not be needed since the vacancy took place in the last year of the term.
There are seven candidates qualified to run for the seat. The Democrats are: Curtis White, William Ford, Joe Morse and Freddie Bardley. The Republicans who intend to run are Shank Phelps, Tom Roberson and David Starsky.
The primary will take place Aug. 2. The general election is set for Nov. 8.
Other items on the agenda include:
u A right-of-way request by AT&T.
u An inter-fund transfer regarding the county education building.
u Supplemental agreements on Poorhouse Road.
u A bid opening for a volunteer fire truck.
The supervisors will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the county courthouse.
