SARAH – The East Webster Wolverines pounded out 14 hits to defeat Strayhorn 16-1 on the road Friday night in the second round of the Class 2A baseball playoffs.
It was the first baseball game played for East Webster since the devastating storm that blew through Cumberland early Wednesday morning.
Ty Hendrix took the pitching win for the Wolverines, who improved to 18-6 overall with the victory.
Hendrix also provided plenty of offense for East Webster with two hits, including a three-run home run.
Conner Burton also had two hits for the Wolverines, including a two-run homer.
Codie Silver added a grand slam for East Webster.
"We seemed really focused all game," said East Webster head coach Wes Johnson. "We scored three runs in the first inning and just kept swinging the bats really well."
The victory gives the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, which resumes today at 1 p.m.
Today's contest, a designated East Webster home game, will be played in Houston due to the damage in Cumberland.
Codie Silver is slated to be the starting pitcher for the Wolverines.
"Codie Silver has been as consistent of a pitcher as we've had this year," said Johnson. "You know what you're going to get with him. He throws strikes and we expect him to do the same again."
An East Webster win today would send the Wolverines into the third round of the playoffs against either Bruce or Mantachie.
A Wolverines loss would send East Webster back to Sarah on Monday for a decisive third game in the series against Strayhorn.
