MERIDIAN – Max Bartlett hurled a four-hitter for 5 2/3 innings and the helped the Starkville Yellowjackets defeat the Meridian Wildcats on Saturday.
Bartlett struck out seven batters and only walked two for the Jackets, who improved to 9-11 overall.
"We made some very good defensive plays behind him," Starkville head coach Danny Carlisle said. "We made a couple of errors, but when the game got close, we really backed up Max well."
After the Jackets took the lead 1-0 in the second inning, Meridian was able to tie the game with a run in the third.
In the fourth frame, Marico Clark got the game-winning hit for Starkville. Clark had a single to follow up singles by Daniel Murphree and Hayden Higginbotham.
The Jackets played their final regular season game at South Panola on Tuesday, a Region 2 game that SHS must win to have a chance to get into the Class 6A playoffs.
