The Starkville High School bowling team gathered for a celebration last Thursday for the accomplishments of the past year.
With a fifth-place finish for the Yellowjackets and a sixth-place showing for the Lady Jackets in the state, it made for a proud coach Jim Philamlee.
Philamlee still sees room for improvement with the members of the squad returning next year.
"I think we could have done better, but I was impressed with the junior varsity," Philamlee said. "We've got six coming from Armstrong and two going to 9th grade. I'm impressed with what we've got coming. Of course, we graduated four seniors so that hurts."
At the end of the year scholarship tournament held a couple of weeks ago, over $$17,000 in scholarships were raised.
Philamlee said about 53 people showed up for the banquet to recognize award winners and show appreciation for those who supported the program.
Adam Hays had the highest average for boys varsity, while Mariah Newman had the highest average for girls varsity and Cody Prewitt had the highest average for the junior varsity.
Philamlee gave credit to his assistant coach Cindy Prewitt for her work and thanked members of the SSD administration, led by superintendent Judy Couey, for their support. He also singled out Jane Loveless, next year's president of the booster club, and Cathy Valdes, who helps the team as the photographer and with the booster club.
