The Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation will host the first-ever Historic Starkvegas Run on Saturday, March 26.
The event, which comprises a 10K run, a 5K run, a family run fun and a dog walk, will take participants through the three nationally registered historic neighborhoods of Starkville.
“It’s a way to get people in the community together for a fun event,” SCNF board member Patrik Nordin said. “The Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation promotes the traditional, historic neighborhoods of Starkville. We encourage people to live, work and play in those neighborhoods. We’re about the preservation of the city’s historic neighborhoods.”
Runners will start in the Greensboro historic district in the Greensboro Center parking lot. They will travel east towards the Nash historic district, make their way through the Overstreet historic district and back to Greensboro.
“One thing that we’re really trying to do is make people think of central Starkville as a neighborhood, even though each area has distinctive characteristics,” SCNF board member Michelle Jones said, “so we selected a run that took people through the different neighborhoods to help them understand how they are all interconnected.”
The runs will serve as a fundraiser for the SCNF, who in the past has been responsible for the historic street signs and neighborhood markers in the three registered districts in Starkville. The SCNF hopes in the future to provide directional signage and driving tours, Nordin said.
Registration fees before March 23 are $25 for the 10K, $20 for the 5K and $10 for the entire family to participate in the fun run and also $10 for the dog walk, and people can do so online at http://www.racesonline.com. Participants will receive a race t-shirt.
The race will be held Saturday, March 26 with the 10k and 5k starting at 8 a.m. from the Greensboro Center parking lot, and the family fun run and dog walk will start shortly after the runners have left. Medals and trophies will be awarded to the winners of the races.
