SOUTHAVEN – The Starkville Yellowjackets were able to rally for a 66-55 victory at DeSoto Central Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 6A North State Tourament.
The Jackets, who improved to 18-7, fell behind 11-8 after the first quarter and trailed by as many as nine points before coming back.
"We struggled to open the game in the first quarter, but we seemed to settle down in the second quarter," SHS boys coach Greg Carter said. "We were down 19-10 and made a run to tie the game (at halftime 26-26). We continued to make that run into the third quarter. It all started with defending and rebounding."
The Jackets out-scored their host 23-10 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Jacolby Mobley, who had missed the last two games with bruised ribs, led Starkville with 30 points.
"He played well," Carter said. "I still don't think he was at 100 percent, but he was able to get to the basket and that seemed to get us going."
Steve Brand also scored in double figures for Starkville with 16 points and was followed by Tory Rice with six points, Chris Harris with five points, Stanley Childs with four points, Ravonte Gandy with three points and Mike Brand with two points.
The Jackets move on in North State play to take on Jackson Murrah on Friday. Tipoff from Vicksburg is set for 6 p.m.
