Colonel Robert G. Clapp, USMC Ret. passed away peacefully in his sleep the evening of Feb. 4, 2011.
Robert, or “Bob” as he was known to friends and family, was born in New Haven, Conn. on Sept. 23, 1936.
He was one of two sons born to the late Robert and Marianne Clapp of Starkville.
Bob retired to his home here in Chelan, Wash. after 30 years of distinguished service to his country and Corps, a highly decorated and respected Marine. Bob was very proud of his numerous commanding officer assignments of Marine Squadrons and Air Groups. He was honored to be selected as the first Marine officer to command a Navy training squadron. He was also proud that he had three tours of duty in Viet Nam serving his country. After many years of being a very highly respected senior Marine, Bob and his wife Nancy retired to their home here in Chelan in 1985.
He will be missed by the many e-mail contacts and military friends he communicated with daily. Bob was a very adept writer and story teller, especially concerning his life as an aviator and Marine. During his time in the Corps he flew the A-4 Skyhawk and other jet aircraft. Later he transitioned to the Cobra helicopter.
Many of his e-mail conversations included aviation and his love of flying.
It was Bobs desire to make his “final touchdown” at N.A.S. Pensicola, Fla., the home of Naval Aviation.
Col. Clapp is survived by his wife Nancy of 43 years, two daughters, Lisa Clapp of Destin, Fla., Susan Gandy, husband Billy, and two grandsons Chris and Nick of Mooresville, N.C., his brother Roger Clapp, sister-in-law Laura of Florence, Miss., four nephews Roger, Todd, Andrew, and Ben Clapp of Miss., sister-in-law Mary
Anderson of Eugene, OR., two nieces Jennifer Workman of Spokane and Jessica Musser of Wenatchee, and many dear friends and extended family in Chelan and Manson.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Lake Chelan Boat Club House on Saturday Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. Family and friends will meet for a potluck memorial.
