Choctaw Co. deputy faces federal charges

OXFORD — A Choctaw County deputy is free on $25,000 bond following a federal indictment on charges of obstruction of justice and civil rights violations.
Billy C. Scott Jr. will go to trial March 28, appearing before U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock, said Daniel McMullen, special agent in charge, Federal Bureau of
Investigation and Northern District of Mississippi U.S. Attorney John Marshall Alexander in a statement issued Thursday.
Scott appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jerry Davis, in Aberdeen.
The indictment alleges that on April 1, 2010, Scott ordered his police dog to attack a Mathiston
male resident “without any legitimate law enforcement purpose, causing the victim to suffer
bodily injury,” the statement reads. Plus, the indictment alleges Scott failed to protect the victim from harm and falsified a report to cover up what happened.
If his convicted, Scott would face up to 10 years in prison for the civil rights charge and 20 years for the charge alleging
If convicted, Scott faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison for the civil rights offense and 20 years of prison time for the false statements charge.
The FBI’s Jackson Field Office – Oxford Resident Agency – is investigating the charge. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, along with the the U.S.
Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi, is prosecuting the case.
Officials said the charges are purely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
