SHS boys get 2-1 soccer playoff win at Horn Lake

January 28, 2011

From Staff Reports

HORN LAKE – There's still plenty of soccer left, but the Starkville High boys have jumped over their first major hurdle in the Class 6A playoffs.
Playing on the road against Division 1 champion Horn Lake Thursday, the Yellowjackets picked up a 2-1 win in the first round matchup.
The victory allows Starkville to host Saturday's second round match against Division 3 winner Madison Central, who defeated Vicksburg 3-0 on Tuesday to advance.
The Jackets' Saturday match against Madison Central is set for 1 p.m.
On Thursday, Starkville's Taylor Wise notched the night's first goal in the third minute off a cross from Alvaro Pichardo to put the Jackets up 1-0.
Dylan Howard added Starkville's second goal in the 47th minute off of a corner kick from Wise.
Horn Lake added its goal in the 80th minute to cap the scoring.
With the win, Starkville improved to 16-1-1 and can advance to the Feb. 1 North State title game with another victory Saturday.
"Winning (Thursday) kind of nullifies our loss to Tupelo," said SHS head coach Brian Bennett in reference to last Saturday's defeat which cost the Jackets the Division 2 championship and relegated them to the division's runner-up. "We were disappointed to not get to play our first (playoff) game at home, but if you go on the road and win, you have a good chance to play at home in the second round, which we got. You can't ask for more than that."
The Starkville girls also played their first round playoff game Thursday, falling on the road to DeSoto Central.
The Lady Jackets concluded their season with a final overall record of 13-5.
Both the Jackets' and Lady Jackets' Thursday contests were originally scheduled for Tuesday, but pushed back two days due to weather conditions.
