January 16, 2011

From Staff Reports

GREENWOOD – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers gave the type of effort on the road that coach Glenn Schmidt was looking for, but fell just short of pulling off a big win.
The Pillow Academy Lady Mustangs defended their home court with a 59-52 victory on Saturday.
After trailing 24-19 at halftime, the Lady Vols were able to tie the score and take a brief lead in the third quarter. The two teams battled through the fourth quarter with Pillow Academy coming through at the end.
"It was a great game," Schmidt said. "We played as hard as have all season."
Starkville Academy (13-11 overall, 4-5 North Division 1-AAA) shot 40 percent from the field and 69 percent from the free-throw line. The Lady Vols were out-rebounded 31-26.
Anna Lea Little led SA with 19 points while Sallie Kate Richardson added another double-double to her credit with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two blocks and four assists.
Anna Prestridge, who had another good floor game according to Schmidt, had seven points and six rebounds. Julianne Jackson contributed seven points and Nora Kathryn Carroll had four points and six rebounds despite playing the entire game with a knee bruise suffered during Friday's home game against Washington.
