A memorial service for Leroy H. Boyd will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Starkville with burial in Oklahoma at a later date.
Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 9 a.m.
Dr. Boyd, 75, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at the OCH Regional Medical Center. He was born and raised in Ellis County in western Oklahoma.
He received a bachelor of science degree in animal science from Oklahoma State University and master of science and doctoral degrees in animal science from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Boyd was on the faculty of the Animal Husbandry Department (later Animal and Dairy Science) at Mississippi State University and during his 38 years of service, he taught courses related to sheep, horses, livestock judging and Western Equitation.
He maintained a lifelong interest in sheep, and he judged sheep competitions at livestock shows in 32 states, kept a small flock of sheep and trained Border Collies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, P.R. and Faye Dickson Boyd, and brother, Wendall Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine Robertson Boyd; two daughters, Susanne (David) Purvis of Houston, Texas and Diane (Jeffrey) Schultz of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; grandchildren, Rebecca and Timothy Purvis and Nathaniel Schultz; brother James (Marylee) Boyd of Abilene, Texas; nieces, Catherine Curtis and Carol (Martin) Schiel of Oklahoma City; and nephews James Boyd of Abilene, Texas, Randy Boyd of Austin, Texas, and Garvin (Loretta) Boyd of The Woodlands, Texas.
