“Livin’ in the Moment.”
That’s the name of the current single available on Itunes from West Point native Ty Brown, but it’s also a fair description of Brown’s life these days.
A year ago at this time, Brown was an aspiring musician in Nashville, trying to break through while maintaining a steady job with a major pharmaceutical company. While the job provided for his needs, Brown’s dream was to make it as a musician. After a whirlwind 2010, it looks as if that dream is coming true.
Tonight, Brown, who lived the first 15 years of his life in West Point before his family moved to Booneville, will return home to perform in the Golden Triangle as he headlines a show at Rick’s Cafe in Starkville, the latest stop on a career that seems to be taking off.
“My life changed dramatically in 2010 and I’m thankful for everything I’ve been given,” said Brown, who signed a record deal with Buddy Lee Attractions in Nashville in 2010, “Last year at this time, I was working 75 to 80 hours a week for a pharmaceutical company. It was a good job, but it wasn’t my dream. Music is where my heart is.”
Brown’s big break came in the spring of 2010, when he was added to the cast of “The Bachelorette,” ABC’s hit show that was one of the 10 most watched shows during the summer months.
Brown became a fan favorite on the reality show, lasting eight weeks and showing his musical side on one episode, where he debuted the single that’s currently available. While music is his passion, Brown is grateful for the TV show that gave him national exposure.
“That really gave me the opening I think I needed,” said Brown in a phone interview with the Daily Times Leader on Thursday. “More importantly, I think it gave my the guts to really go for it. I’ve always know that I want to sing for a living, but appearing on that show gave me the feeling that I could really do this.”
With his time on “The Bachelorette” providing a springboard, Brown has reached new heights since that time, signing his deal with Buddy Lee attractions, which is also the record label of artists Jason Aldean, Edwin McCain and Jeff Bates, among others.
Currently, Brown is touring throughout the country and currently working on an album, which he hopes will “Be finished by April.”
Tonight, Brown will take the stage at Rick’s Cafe Americain in Starkville, which is also a homecoming for the Mississippi State University graduate.
Brown will be performing his single, songs from his upcoming album, and other favorites. He will also have copies of his EP release available for purchase. While coming home is a joy for any performer, Brown says he’ll get to enjoy three homecomings today.
“I’ll be stopping in Booneville to see my parents and drop my dog off at their house, then I’ll get to stop in West Point and see some people,” said Brown. “Then I’m headed to Starkville.”
It’s a busy life, but one Brown says he “Wouldn’t trade it for anything. This is what I’ve always wanted to do.”
Asked what he would say to his former classmates and others in West Point  or Starkville who are thinking about coming to the show, Brown was quick with an enthusiastic answer.
“I hope I see everybody out there,” Brown said. “Just let them know that this has been a dream of a West Point guy for a very long time, and I promise you will see a good show.”
Brown’s show starts at 9 p.m. today.
