Wednesday night fire damages duplex

January 7, 2011

SDN Staff Reports

The cause of a late Wednesday night fire on Garrard Road remains under investigation, Starkville Fire Department officials say.
The fire in a duplex at 300 E. Garrard Road was reported about 10 p.m. Wednesday by one of the residents living there, said Fire Marshal Stein McMullen on Thursday.
Firefighters from Fire Station No. 3 were quickly on the scene and found furniture and flooring in a bedroom of the one-story duplex on fire. Firefighters from Fire Station No. 1 quickly arrived to assist them, and the blaze was extinguished in less than 5 minutes, McMullen said.
Flames damaged the bedroom and flooring in the bedroom and caused heat and smoke damage throughout the apartment where the fire was contained, McMullen said.
The neighboring apartment in the duplex sustained no damage from heat or flames, but residents did report a slight smoky smell in the aftermath of the blaze, McMullen said. The investigation into the fire’s cause is continuing. No one was injured in the Wednesday night blaze, McMullen said.
