Late charge pushes East Webster to victory
From Staff Reports
KILMICHAEL – Down 10 points with less than a minute left, no one could have blamed the East Webster boys basketball team if they had packed it in Thursday night.
Instead, the Wolverines put up a remarkable final 56 seconds of play to rally from behind and top Winona 71-70 at the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament.
"We were a step behind all night long," said East Webster head coach Corey Stidham. "We didn't deserve to win the ballgame. We only played the last couple of minutes, but we'll take any 'W'."
The Wolverines (8-6) tied the game at 68 with 18 seconds to play, fell back behind 70-68 just seconds later, then capped the win with Ledrick Patterson's clutch three-pointer with just one second to play.
Patterson finished with a team-high 21 points for East Webster.
Miguel Graham added 19 points, Xavier Moye tallied 11 and Charles Guyton finished with 10 for the Wolverines.
East Webster will be back in action today, facing tournament host Montgomery County at 8:30 p.m.
"I hope (Thursday's game) will get us to put our stinger out (today) because we didn't play well (Thursday) at all," said Stidham.

East Webster (2-13), playing without the services of starting post players Mary Jo Christ and Chelsey Gibson, couldn't find any offensive rhythm according to Lady Wolverines head coach Mandy Fondren.
"Mary Jo is my leading scorer and Chelsey Gibson just helps us being out there," said Fondren. "We just couldn't score. The first time we played (Winona) this year, they only beat us by six, but it hurt us not having those two girls."
Jada Washington scored a team-high 11 points for East Webster.
East Webster returns to the court today, facing tournament host Montgomery County at 7 p.m.
"I think if we come out, put pressure on (Montgomery County) and force turnovers, we can get some early points and win the game," said Fondren.
