Membership drive underway for Starkvilles Friends of the Library

January 1, 2011

The Friends of the Starkville Public Library (FOL) is excited about a busy year of involvement in supporting the library.
A membership drive is in progress but members are welcome at any time. Many individuals and groups contribute time and money to Friends, recognizing that the library improves their lives and the lives of others.
The FOL is a volunteer organization of people interested in supporting, expanding, and improving the Starkville Public Library.
Friends’ support also extends to the Sturgis and Maben libraries in the Oktibbeha County Library System.
The Friends organization provides funds to help the library purchase books, media materials, genealogy supplies, and computers above and beyond what the regular library budget can provide.
They also provide matching funds for grants to the library.
Ginny Holtcamp, director of the Starkville-Oktibbeha County Public Library System, believes, “our library system would not survive without our Friends who add a special dimension and another resource for getting people and books/information together. Further, our community would not be the strong, vibrant community without Friends working to create and maintain a strong and viable library system.”
Carrie Hawkins, longtime library patron and former board member, says that she is thrilled to see so many folks in the library looking through the stacks, reading newspapers, and using all of the computers available.
She adds that she has seen first-hand the many services rendered to adults and children of this community by the library. “Being on the board of the Friends was one of the most rewarding services that I have given to civic organizations.”
In 1988, a group exemption from Federal income tax was obtained under section 501(c)3 of the Code for Friends of Mississippi Libraries, Inc.
This includes the Starkville Public Library System.
The Starkville Friends chapter is up to date and fully compliant with the Internal Revenue Service 501(c)3.
