Hearing will precede sidewalk exemption vote

December 30, 2010

City Hall has one more public hearing left – set for Tuesday – before officials consider exempting what has long been called the Industrial Park from sidewalks.
Since the Starkville Board of Aldermen adopted an ordinance requiring the construction of sidewalks along with new development, officials have said no to developers seeking exemptions until Rudy Johnson, director of the Golden Triangle Planning and Development District, publicly stated that he would take his business out of Oktibbeha County if not granted an exemption for his plans to build a Senior Enrichment Center.
And at the direction of the board, Starkville Transportation Committee members have been researching options for a variance process to be included in the ordinance with members holding two public hearings of their own.
Mayor Parker Wiseman has announced he would veto approval of the proposed relief from the ordinance’s provisions in the following locations: Industrial Park Road from Pollard Road to Miley Road, Miley Road from Industrial Park Road to Airport Road, Airport Road from Miley Road to Pollard Road and Pollard Road from Airport Road to Industrial Park Road.
In other business, the board will also consider approving the following items:
• The Alternative Fuels Conversion Project for the Mississippi Energy Transportation Grant.
• A request by Mark Welch for a zoning change from R-3 Multi-Family to a B-1 Buffer District located at 711 Vine Street and a conditional use to allow a parking lot at the site.
• All claims as of Dec. 30, 2009.
• Temporary pay increases for employees of the Fire Department assigned to temporary positions due to retirement and absences after work-related injuries.
